Flower Care Guide

Your flowers arrived fresh. Here's how to keep them that way for as long as possible โ€” written for Philippine weather, where heat is the real enemy.

๐ŸŒน The Five Minutes That Matter Most

Flower care guide from The Flowercart

Do these as soon as you can after the bouquet arrives.

  1. 1

Trim the stems. Cut about 3 to 5 cm off each stem at a 45-degree angle, ideally under running water.

  2. 2

Use a clean vase. Fill it with fresh water at room temperature.

  3. 3

Add the flower food. Use the sachet included with your bouquet. If you've run out, a teaspoon of sugar works in a pinch.

  4. 4

Strip the lower leaves. Any leaf sitting below the waterline will rot and cloud the water.

  5. 5

Change the water daily. In Manila heat this matters more than anything else. Re-trim the stems each time you do.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Keeping Them Cool

Heat and humidity shorten a bouquet's life faster than anything. A few simple habits go a long way:

  • Keep them in the coolest room in the house. If you have aircon, around 22โ€“25ยฐC is ideal.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight, and away from the top of the fridge or any appliance that gives off heat.
  • Avoid placing them directly in front of an electric fan โ€” constant airflow dries petals out.
  • Keep them away from ripening fruit. The ethylene gas fruit releases makes flowers wilt early.

๐ŸŒป Care by Flower Type

Rose care guide

Roses

  • Keep them cool and out of direct sun.
  • Mist the petals lightly with water once a day.
  • Remove the outer guard petals so the bloom can open.
Lasts 5โ€“7 days
Sunflower care guide

Sunflowers

  • Use a tall, sturdy vase โ€” the heads are heavy.
  • Bright but indirect light suits them best.
  • Change the water every day; sunflowers drink a lot.
Lasts 6โ€“12 days
Lily care guide

Lilies

  • Pinch off the pollen-heavy stamens โ€” they stain fabric and removing them extends the bloom.
  • Keep them somewhere cool with good air circulation.
  • Trim the stems underwater to stop air bubbles blocking the stem.
Lasts 7โ€“10 days

Carnations

  • Among the longest-lasting blooms we carry.
  • Cut between the nodes on the stem, not through them.
  • Change the water every two days.
Lasts 10โ€“14 days

โš ๏ธ Signs Your Flowers Need Attention

Drooping heads

Give them fresh water and a new stem trim.

Cloudy water

Change it immediately and rinse the stems.

Slimy stems

Wash the stems and scrub the vase properly before refilling.

A few wilted petals

Pull them off so the healthy ones get the water.

A Note on Home Remedies

You'll see advice online about adding bleach, aspirin, or hairspray to flowers. We don't recommend any of it. The flower food we include is made for the job, and clean water changed daily does more than any trick.
